Monday marks the 5th year after the 9/11 terror attacks.
As a New Yorker, I did what many people did: watched the footage on CNN while listening to Howard Stern’s show on the radio and working the phones checking with loved ones. The way Stern, Robin and the cast captured the events on-air was amazing; we all were gradually and shockingly realizing at the same time what exactly was going on right around us. In many ways, the disbelief and horror we all felt somehow was comforted when listening to Howard Stern — more so than what the talking heads on TV were telling.
Stern helped us feel less alone. That we were all experiencing a shared moment. In essence, the “shock jock” helped us through one of this country’s most shocking tragedies.
As a longtime media fan — and specifically a Stern fan — Stern delivered his best show ever when his audience needed him most, staying on the air well through the afternoon.
A year later, in 2002, Stern replayed the 9/11 broadcast in its entirety. But that’s the last time most of his listeners have heard that show. It deserves to be archived in the Museum of Radio and Television Broadcasting.
Well, turns out the E! television cameras were also rolling for his former cable show throughout that day, too….providing footage of the show which has never been aired.
What started as a day interviewing Pamela Anderson’s breasts morphed into an important observational as-it-happening-right-now broadcast – and is now being made available to the public (the video with the audio) in a 90-minute edited version as well as further unseen video from the September 12, 2001 show through Stern’s InDemand Howard TV channel.
That’s the rememberance show I want to see. That’s what will help me re-live the moment. And give 9/11 its proper honor and respect.

I only started listening to Howard about a year before he joined the satelite broadcasts. I was actually genuinely surprised that his content was clever (for the most part) and far more emotionally involved than any of his competitors whether shock jock or conservative. Bravo to Stern for doing what he does so well and for so long.

Damn straight I pay for a service, charity is for the lazy.Howard is a hero because he stayed in a NYC skyscraper and kept his listeners posted to what was happening even when told to leave. The day later and the day after and the day after when Leno and Letterman aeverybody else was in Dick Cheney’s bunker, Howard kept us moving ahead. He never wavered. Howard deserves every ounce of Ego he has earned. That’s gangster talk for you punks.
Howard Stern was who I listened to that day… He is an fantastic guy who enjoys acting like an idiot, but knows when not to be one.

I whole-heartedly agree with this article. I was a year out of college. I listened to Howard in the morning and Rush Limbaugh in the afternoon, if you can believe that (I grew way out of it, what?!).To anyone who writes off the King of all Media as a juvenile, self-centered, jerk, I beg you to remember the scandal and cold-sholdering that plagued Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Andy Kaufman, Charles Bukowski, Alfred Hitchcock, and others like them. Every unconventional nuance was outside of what was expected or morally appropriate, and they made a huge impact on how we see the world today.To hear Howard and the talanted folks whom he surrounded himself humanized in such a genuine way, is almost as important to me as it was hearing it the day it happened.As I age I can almost hear myself separating those summers before 9/11, and after, with the expression, “those were the days”.

STERN IS THE MAN. I HAVE MISSED HIM SINCE HE WENT OFF THE FREE AIR, BUT AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT WE GOT A CAR FROM THE AUCTION IN YESTERDAY FOR SALE AT OUR USED CAR LOT. AND GUESS WHAT??? IT HAD AN ACTIVATED SIRIUS STARMATE IN IT AND OHH YES I GOT DIBS. IT IS NOW INSTALLED IN MY TRUCK AND NOW I CAN LISTEN TO STERN AGAIN. HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN.
